Carolina Colonies A Brief History Carolina was so called by the French, in 1563 or 1564, in honor of Charles IX, King of France (Carolus in Latin, meaning Charles),Updated May 09, 2018. The North Carolina Colony was founded in 1663 by settlers from Virginia. In 1655, Nathaniel Batts, a farmer from Virginia founded a permanent settlement in North Carolina. Later in 1663, King Charles II recognized the efforts of eight noblemen who helped him regain the throne in England by giving them the Province of Carolina. carolinas colony history
Coastal North Carolina was the site of the first English attempts to colonize the New World. Two colonies began in the 1580s under a charter granted by Queen Elizabeth to Sir Walter Raleigh. Both were at Roanoke Island, and both failed.
